The efficacy of mulberry root extract on hair and eyelashes

Mulberry root extract is a type of extract obtained from the bark of mulberry roots. It contains flavonoids and is used as a Chinese herbal medicine with diuretic, antitussive and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also used in a wide variety of whitening cosmetic products since it is a very powerful tyrosinase activation inhibitor.

We discovered that mulberry root extract obtained by a special extraction method also has hair and eyelash growth effects for recovering the hair cycle. We also determined that the mulberry root extract had a positive effect on hair and eyelashes in a human study.

Regardless of their age, women are more and more interested in beautifying their eyelashes. They try to lengthen their eyelashes by using extensions and adjust their eyelash shape with mascara and eyelash curlers. However, as women apply eyelash makeup more frequently, damage to their eyelashes increases. As a result, they are increasingly experiencing problems such as eyelashes breaking or being lost. Eyelashes protect the eye from sweat and dust, and prevent foreign objects from touching the surface of the eye. It is therefore very important to keep the lashes healthy. Mulberry trees are native to the Americas and Asia, and their fruit has been used to eat as well as to make wines and teas. They are most widely known for cultivating silk worms but as well as having edible fruit, the bark of mulberries contains a large amount of resveratrol, and the leaves are used to make nutritional supplements. In Chinese medicine, mulberry has been used to treat hypertension, fatigue, and it has also been used for skin whitening. Fuji-Sangyo released FMRE (Fuji Mulberry Root Extract), a hair growth product, a few years ago both inside and outside Japan. The product has been evaluated extremely highly by users from many countries and of both sexes since then. It has been confirmed in a number of tests that FMRE can realise a desirable hair cycle by shortening the telogen (rest) stage and lengthening the anagen (growth) stage. We have conducted FMRE clinical testing on humans and confirmed that 60% of participants exhibited improvement. Just like hair, eyelashes have their own hair cycle. The application of FMRE at the base of eyelashes therefore should result in the extension of the anagen stage, thereby lengthening and volumising eyelashes. However, FMRE could not be applied to the skin around the eyes because it uses a solvent made from 70% ethanol. To solve this problem, we made a number of preproduction samples and finally succeeded in making a less irritating solvent. This article reports on the effectiveness of FMRE on hair and eyelashes.
