Preparation:

Phase A: Disperse Avicel in water using high shear (e.g. a rotor-stator mixer for 10 minutes). Dissolve Protanal ester CF in the Avicel dispersion by mixing for 10 to 15 minutes at moderate shear. Heat to 75°C. Phase B: Combine all ingredients and heat to 75°C. Slowly add Phase A to Phase B and homogenize. Cool to 50°C with constant slow mixing. Phase C: Add preservative. Cool to below 30°C before packaging.

Notes:

Properties A light, non-tacky lotion with water-resistance (not quantified). Stability Limited results available. Stable to centrifugation (4,000 rpm x 60 minutes) and storage at 45°C for 1 month. Avicel PC 591 (INCI name: Microcrystalline Cellulose (and) Cellulose Gum) When dispersed in water, Avicel PC 591 forms a thixotropic network of insoluble rod-like particles that contributes to emulsion stability, suspends dense materials and provides rheology control. Protanal ester CF (INCI name: Propylene Glycol Alginate) Protanal ester CF is manufactured by esterification of algin, a natural hydrocolloid extracted from brown seaweeds. Note that high pH’s (above 8.0) should be avoided because these can lead to some de-esterification.
