During pregnancy, a woman’s body undergoes substantial physiological changes. From the metabolism, positioning of the pelvis, to hormonal levels; there are few areas unaltered by the process of pregnancy, as the body adapts firstly to nurturing the unborn baby, then preparing to give birth, and finally nourishing the newborn.
Each stage of the pregnancy brings with it a different set of physiological changes, and although these vary from person to person, many women find that their skin is one of the most noticeable areas affected. While these skin changes are perfectly normal and mostly painless, many women are keen to use specially formulated skin care products to ensure their skin’s health is maintained during and after pregnancy. This article aims to illustrate changes a pregnant woman’s skin undergoes by describing the more common skin conditions. Not all of the types listed necessarily fall under the “cosmetic” umbrella, but they nevertheless are evidence of the direct and indirect effect of hormonal changes on skin.
