Facial beauty, one of the hottest topics on the Asian skincare industry agenda, will take centre stage at the in-cosmetics Asia Conference, in Bangkok this November.
The conference held on 3 November during the second day of the exhibition, will see renowned international specialists present on topics in three key areas; skin whitening, anti-ageing and anti-acne. Skin whitening is big business in Asia. Worth an estimated $18 billion on the continent alone, the skin whitening industry has been rapidly accelerating since the 1970s, providing huge commercial opportunities for global cosmetic manufacturers to profit from the trend. Leading the expert skin-whitening strand, Dr Nopadon, president of the Thailand Dermatology Society at the University of Chulalongkorn, Bangkok, will be starting the proceedings with a presentation on “Antioxidants: from in vitro to in vivo”. Fabrice Perin, director at Spin Control Asia, will follow with a seminar on the “Non-Invasive Measurements of Skin Colour: Problems and Pitfalls”, while Romuald Vallee, scientific and industrial manager at Codif International will examine the “Effect of some Marine Plant Extracts on Melanogenesis.” The anti-ageing phenomenon continues to gather momentum, with the worldwide market expected to reach $115.5 billion by the end of 2010. And Asia Pacific is a big contributor to this, as the second fastest growing market worldwide. Sales of anti-ageing cosmeceuticals were expected to rise by $1 billion in the region between 2007 and 2010 and there is no sign of this growth abating. With a rapidly ageing population, the continent provides cosmetic manufacturers with the perfect outlet for their latest anti-ageing product developments. Dr Helen Knaggs from Nu Skin will be headlining in the anti-ageing strand, with a seminar that delves into “Ageing and Genes: the Link with Skin”. She will be followed by Dr Panvipa, director at Dermscan Asia who will be focusing on “Catalase & Carbonylation of Stratum Corneum: Differences between Caucasian and Asian Skin”. Dr Liki von Oppen-Bezalel, VP business development & marketing at IBR Ltd, will present on “Colourless Carotenoids: A Novel Way of Stabilising Sunscreens”, while Dr Gilles Pauly, scientific director at Laboratoires Sérobiologiques will look at a “New Approach to Skin Firmness and Elasticity”. Fair and flawless skin is a number one priority for Asians. However, pollution and humidity has aggravated skin problems for many people, meaning almost 80% of the population now suffers from acne and demand for medicated skin care and antiacne treatments has soared. In 2009, the Asia Pacific market for these products was worth approximately $119.5 million and this is predicted to rise by over 17% to $140.4 million by 2014. Dr Simon Young, director of regulatory and external affairs at Unilever Asia will kick off the anti-acne strand at the Facial Beauty Conference with a look at the “Acne Regulations in Asia”. He will be followed by Dr Alain Khaiat, president of Seers Consulting, who will examine the “Physiology of Acne”. Finally Dr Johann W. Wiechers, president of JW Solutions will bring the conference to a close with an examination on “Can the Complex Problem of Acne only be solved with Complex Formulations?” Commenting on this year’s focus on facial beauty, in-cosmetics Asia exhibition manager, Sarah Gibson, said: “Facial beauty is a concern for all women and men in Asia; as such it is the pivotal theme of the conference. Within facial beauty, ageing, whitening and acne have been identified as the hottest topics. The conference will provide the greatest opportunity for participants to get under the skin of the market through a comprehensive overview of the very latest trends and scientific developments sweeping the Asian cosmetic industry.” Last year’s conference was sold out, so it would be advisable for potential delegates to book their place at the Facial Beauty Conference by visiting www.incosmeticsasia.com
