The UK Society of Cosmetic Scientists (SCS) has been organising their event SCS Formulate since 1999 and has developed the format to deliver a range of content ideally suited to the needs of formulators working in the personal care market.
It will take place at the Ricoh Arena – a new modern facility in the heart of the UK. The dates are 9-10 November 2010. SCS Formulate is devised specifically to keep formulators up-to-date with the pace of development in the market and to provide them with all the tools, techniques and materials they need for creating personal care products. Its success has been achieved by delivering an applications–oriented mix of the latest ingredients and formulation technique with market driven data. SCS Formulate is where new ideas are formed, scientific advances adopted and innovation applied, achieved via a richness and diversity of content that encourages an exchange of knowledge, experience and expertise – key elements in creativity. Business is all about change – new trends in personal care products, the way people look, formulations and ingredients, and the science behind the applications. The two-day programme at SCS Formulate is one of the most focused and authoritative of its kind, bringing together leading scientific experts and suppliers from around the world. Success is about making things happen. That is why the focus of The Knowledge programme is to deal with essential techniques that deliver practical applicationsoriented outcomes. The Knowledge seminars are delivered by internationally renowned speakers – experts in their fields with many years’ experience at the cutting edge of personal care development. Following is an outline of the papers that will be presented.

John Woodruff, Creative Developments Emulsions are a fundamental product form for many cosmetic categories and these are made possible by careful selection of the optimum emulsifier system. Cosmetic science has progressed a long way from the early beeswax-borax and, triethanolamine-stearate combinations and there is now a trend towards those that form liquid crystal structures and emulsifiers that are acceptable when making certified natural cosmetics. This presentation gives a brief introduction to emulsifier types then explores many of the more recent introductions that satisfy today’s demands for stable emulsions with particular properties.
