German ingredients supplier Symrise has introduced a deodorant to the market which they claim is both environmentally friendly and kind to the skin.
This new ingredient, SymDeo B125 (provisional INCI name: Methyl cyclohexylpentanol), controls the growth of free gram-positive bacteria which are a major contributor to body odour and also breaks down biofilm formed by Corynebacterium xerosis bacteria. The belief is that by targeting these forms of bacteria directly, the deodorant can be less harsh on the skin while protecting natural skin flora. Symrise have indicated that the product has performed well during in vivo and in vitro studies, displaying a significant reduction in body odour with efficacy on a par with triclosan. Symrise believe this level of performance is important to a market keen to find alternative anti-bacterial agents to triclosan. SymDeo B125 also aims to tap into the market for environmentally conscious purchasing and achieves this by not being an organochloride, which immediately separates it from most other deodorants. The recommended dose of SymDeo B125 is 0.3-1.0%. Symrise hope that the combination of gentle skin treatment and environmental benefits will make the product a success in a market which holds high importance for these two particular attributes.
