Due to a greater consumer interest in natural, organic, and environmentally friendly products, organic cosmetics have carved out a stable and profitable niche for the cosmetics industry, which is intensifying the development of new brands every year.
The absence of international regulations for natural and organic cosmetics and the lack of homogeneity of standards is confusing consumers about the differences between natural, organic, and conventional cosmetics. The aim of the study described in this article is to identify, analyse and compare the different certification bodies and regulations1 in the main international markets for organic cosmetics.
Materials and methods
This work analyses similarities and divergences in certification programmes in the organic cosmetics emerging market. For this purpose, different reference standards from Europe, North America, Japan and Australia were reviewed (Table 1). The comparison was conducted focusing on four main aspects:
- General certification programme scope.
- Product labelling and advertising requirements.
- Organic manufacturing and control process requirements.
- Ingredients: origin, quality criteria and percentage of the natural/organic elements.
