US brand issues product recall over formulation mix-up

Beauty brand Drunk Elephant has issued a voluntary recall in the United States for three products due to an ingredient mix-up between preservatives and surfactants during production.

The formulation of certain lots of Beste No. 9 Jelly Cleanser, Lala Retro Whipped Cream and Protini Polypeptide Cream were compromised.

Affected lots of Beste No. 9 Jelly Cleanser contain an additional preservative ingredient -  Microkill COS (chlorphenesin, caprylyl glycol, and phenoxyethanol) made by Arxada - not listed on the product ingredient list – that may cause irritation for people with sensitive skin.

Meanwhile, affected lots of Lala Retro Whipped Cream contain a surfactant Mirataine CBS made by Syensqo (cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine, sodium chloride, sodium hydroxide, and water) not listed on the product ingredient list.

The product does not contain preservative, which may allow for microbial growth. Affected lots were found to contain yeast, some of which was found to be Candida parapsilosis.

Affected lots of Protini Polypeptide Cream also contain Mirataine CBS surfactant instead of a preservative.

Some lots of affected batches were found to contain bacteria most closely related to the genera Klebsiella and Enterobacter.

The products were sold at major outlets including Ulta, Sephora and Amazon.
