LG Chem, Daebong LS to develop multifunctional active

LG Chem has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Korean compatriot Daebong LS to commercialise its 100% bio-based 3HP (3-hydroxypropionic acid) as a multifunctional cosmetic active ingredient.

LG Chem has developed its 3HP through a proprietary microbial fermentation process of plant-based raw materials.

Compared to traditional salicylic acid, 3HP is less irritating, remains stable at a pH range of 4-5, and is nearly odourless, making it consumer-friendly.

There have been attempts to develop technology for 3HP worldwide due to its widespread potential for application areas and expandability, but there have been no commercialized cases yet.

LG Chem expects non-clinical tests are expected to show positive results, prompting the company to sign the MoU with Daebong LS.

“The two companies decided to select a functional cosmetics product group suitable for using 3HP as a raw material, develop a formulation, secure stability, and complete efficacy verification through clinical evaluation by 2025,” said LG in a statement.

“LG Chem holds patents for 3HP strains, fermentation, and purification technologies, and is continuing to apply for patents for various cosmetic compositions using 3HP as a raw material based on non-clinical test results,” it added.

Last year, LG Chem listed 3HP as a new raw material in the International Cosmetic Ingredient Dictionary (ICID) published by the Personal Care Products Council (PCPC) and obtained 100% bio-content certification from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Daebong LS plans to build an integrated R&D centre in Songdo by 2025 and actively pursue overseas market entry, including China.

“Daebong LS is the only company in Korea that has an integrated system for cosmetic raw material/material development, production, sales, and clinical centres, and currently maintains partnerships with approximately 1,000 cosmetics companies at home and abroad,” said LG.

“With this collaboration, LG Chem is expected to expand its new business area in the functional cosmetics raw material sector and accelerate its entry into related markets.

“Daebong LS is expected to further strengthen its competitive edge in the industry in the future through the development of functional new products and commercialization of new raw materials.”
