The Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC) has revealed the awardees and finalists for its 2024 Madam CJ Walker Scholarship sponsored by Mary Kay, Inc.
The Scholarship Selection Committee has awarded $5,000 to two science students: Karissa Richards of University of Toledo (Undergraduate, Cosmetic Science and Formulation Design); and Taylor Scott of University of Cincinnati (Graduate student, Cosmetic Science Master of Science Programme).
The two finalists recognized by the committee this year for their achievements are Lauren Forney of Spelman College (Undergraduate student, Health Science); and Holly Honor of University of Cincinnati (Graduate student, Cosmetic Science Master of Science Programme).
The awardees and finalists will also receive a financial support package to attend the SCC’s 78th Annual Scientific Meeting & Showcase in Los Angeles, California, where they will be recognized on-stage during the Annual Awards Breakfast on 13 December, and have the opportunity to present their research via a Showcase poster.
“This year’s scholarship applicants were another impressive and accomplished group,” said SCC chief executive Erica O’Grady.
“These honourees truly embody the spirit and legacy of Madam C.J. Walker, and we are pleased to recognize their achievements and look forward to their industry contributions to come,” she added.
Established in 2021, the Madam CJ Walker Scholarship supports specific under-represented minority students of any gender identity pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in chemical, physical, medical, pharmaceutical, biological, or related sciences and technology with an interest in pursuing a career in the cosmetics and personal care industry.
Madam CJ Walker (born Sarah Breedlove; 1867-1919) was an American entrepreneur, philanthropist, and political and social activist. She is regarded as the first female self-made millionaire in America.
Walker made her fortune by developing and marketing a line of cosmetics and hair care products for black women through the business she founded, Madam CJ Walker Manufacturing Company.
