Sam Farmer, the owner of gender neutral personal care product maker SamFarmer Skincare, has been elected president of the UK Society of Cosmetic Scientists (SCS).
Farmer takes over from Laura Kirkbride, who becomes Immediate Past President of the trade body while Shona Bear, quality and technical manager at Superdrug, becomes SCS vice-president.
Bear returns to the SCS council as having previously been a member from 2015-2018, while completely new to council are Emma Catchpole (head of formulation, No.7 Beauty), Anne-Laure Fonteneau (head of R&D, The Body Shop) and Dan Whitby (chief scientist, Smink Laboratories).
"The SCS emerges from the pandemic into a challenging time for the cosmetics and personal care industry,” said Farmer (pictured).
“Complex global supply chain issues, dramatic increases in manufacturing costs and environmental concerns to recruitment shortages and navigating the ever-changing trade and tax environment,” he added.
"However, the SCS is creating exciting opportunities in this new era, hosting the IFSCC in September, continuing to work with the Science Council towards members being able to apply to become registered scientists, organising SCS Formulate, investing in both the Diploma in Cosmetic Science and Introduction to Cosmetic Science (ICS) educational courses whilst also focusing on connecting and encouraging the next generation of young scientists.”
Other elected members of the SCS Council include:
- Susan Ayton, founder and managing director, Ayton Global Research
- Kalliopi Dodou, researcher, University of Sunderland
- Mohammed Jamal, chief perfumer and cosmetic chemist, Jamal Perfumers
- Majella Lane, senior lecturer, UCL School of Pharmacy
- Christine Lawson, sustainability affairs manager, CTPA
- Peter Taylor, former associate professor in pharmaceutics, De Montfort University
