BASF explains how its new active ingredient is proven to help improve the appearance of skin of people with atopic dermatitis, a common skin condition that causes itchiness and redness

Atopic dermatitis is a complex skin problem that affects consumers around the globe, showing an increasing frequency of up to 3% in older adults1 . It also affects up to 25% of children2 .

The condition arises from dry skin, which may be caused by factors including genetics, pollution, allergies, hormonal changes, stress or an impaired immune system. Dryness makes the skin fragile. If the physical, microbial and immune barriers of the skin are not repaired and strengthened, this can lead to atopic-prone skin, or atopic dermatitis

This inflammatory condition is characterised by extreme dryness and red patches that are often covered with small vesicles or blisters that cause intense itching. 74% of French consumers with atopic dermatitis say the condition affects their sleep quality, while 68% say it affects their mood and self-esteem3
