Shiseido develops rapid test for indigenous skin bacteria

Shiseido has developed a quick and easy testing method to measure the amount and balance of indigenous skin bacteria in collaboration with Yamato-Esulon and Orcoa.

The Japanese firm said, in most cases, it takes nearly one month to obtain the results of indigenous skin bacteria tests conducted as a service for consumers because it requires a specialized analysis after collecting the samples.

With the application of a compact, simplified PCR (polymerase chain reaction) testing device, said Shiseido, anyone can easily obtain test results in about 40 minutes, allowing them to know the status of their indigenous skin bacteria onsite.

This method offers the potential to give customers an in-store experience and a new beauty service offering personalised solutions.

Shiseido plans to launch a “unique skin bacteria” measuring service using this testing method on a trial basis for visitors at its S/PARK global innovation centre in Yokohama, Japan.

“With these efforts, it has become possible to obtain results in a short time of about 40 minutes, with no restriction in location and no special skills,” it said.

In its research, Shiseido targeted two types of indigenous bacteria: Staphylococcus epidermidis and Propionibacterium acnes.

“[These} are strongly suggested to be related to the beauty and health of the skin and confirmed that the amount and balance of these bacteria are equivalent to the results of those being examined with a conventional method (16S rRNA amplicon analysis).

“As a consequence, we have established a highly accurate and versatile method for testing indigenous skin bacteria.”

In a related development, Shiseido has signed a multiyear licensing agreement to implement Dassault Systèmes’ manufacturing operations management solutions across major production sites globally.

Shiseido said the implementation of Dassault Systèmes’ Perfect Production industry solution experience, which leverages Delmia Apriso applications and is based on the 3DExperience platform, will support the former’s Win 2023 and Beyond business transformation growth strategy by enabling it to focus on improving factory productivity and reducing costs.
