Dark circles and bags under the eyes are a common and universal aesthetic concern, which affects both men and women, regardless of age and ethnic origin. Although they are not of concern in terms of their effects on health, these conditions can be embarrassing and affect quality of life. The aetiology of dark circles and bags under the eyes is complex and multi-factorial. It combines intrinsic factors, such as ethnic origin or heredity, and extrinsic or lifestyle-related factors such as fatigue, lack of sleep, stress, smoking, excess alcohol consumption, hormonal changes, diseases, infections, allergies, etc.
Physiologically-speaking, there are the two main causes behind the appearance of dark circles and bags under the eyes: microcirculation and hyperpigmentation.
