BASF Care Creations has developed a naturally derived product for oral care applications, called Enameguard.
This is said to support the buffering effects of saliva and aids in the natural remineralisation of tooth enamel and it is easy to formulate into a variety of products, including mouthwash and toothpaste.
Enameguard is a hydrolysed wheat protein that is 100% derived from natural and renewable feedstocks and produced via an enzymatic process. It is also non-GMO, cold-processable and suitable for formulations according to the EU and Nordic Swan ecolabels, among others.
BASF added that studies have shown that Enameguard works by binding to the surface of enamel and interacting with the surrounding calcium and phosphate ions found in saliva. There are similar technologies on the market, the company added, but these are water-sensitive, whereas Enameguard is highly water-soluble.
