Postbiotic care for sensitive skin from golden millet

Rahn introduces Defensil-Pure, a product inspired by the natural sourdough fermentation of German bread for the treatment of atopic dermatitis and general care for the skin

In a functioning ecosystem, all living beings are coordinated in their function. External influences throw the ecological system out of balance – and can even throw it off completely. The same applies to our skin. Healthy skin requires a balanced variety of bacteria. If this is out of balance, our skin becomes vulnerable

A large number of different microorganisms – bacteria, viruses, fungi and yeasts – accumulate on our skin. However, if the microbial diversity is in balance, it serves as a defence against intruders. Internal and external factors alike, including stress, lifestyle UV, the climate, environment and very dry or sensitive skin, can all upset the balance of the skin microbiota by activating the inflammasome and letting ‘bad’ bacteria inhabit the space created.

Certain bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, secrete toxins in order to enlarge their habitat on the skin. These toxins are recognised by the inflammasome, a multi-protein complex that activates caspase-1, a protease that activates inflammatory factors and triggers cell death (pyroptosis) in affected cells. The processes lead to strong inflammatory reactions, which thicken the skin but also disrupt the skin barrier. The chronification of these processes can lead to atopic dermatitis, with the consequence being scaling, thickening, dry skin and itching
