Massachusetts-based biotech Conagen has announced the successful development of kaempferol via a proprietary fermentation technique. This will be marketed via the company’s commercial partner, Blue California.
Kaempferol, a flavonoid, is one of the most powerful natural antioxidants, and has the health-promoting properties. It is especially rich in green leafy vegetables like spinach and kale. The world market is expected to surpass $6.5 billion by 2025, according to a recent report by Global Market Insights. Although mainly used in dietary supplements, it also finds cosmetic applications.
“We’re bringing to market a pure and natural kaempferol at affordable prices that were not possible or available until now,” said Dr Casey Lippmeier, VP of innovation at Conagen. “Conagen’s scalable, precision fermentation for producing flavonoids like kaempferol is more efficient and sustainable than what can be achieved with the chemically synthesised or botanically sourced molecule.”
