Fullerene aids UV absorption and antioxidant protection

There are two types of skin aging: photoageing and natural aging. Natural ageing is ageing by endogenous reasons; therefore, this type of aging cannot be resisted or prevented.

On the other hand, photoaging is caused by exogenous ultraviolet rays (sunlight); hence, it is possible to prevent this type of aging by using appropriate sun care. It is said that 80% of skin ageing is due to photoaging. The importance of sun care has recently penetrated even into the consciousness of consumers.

Photoaging is mainly caused by ultraviolet rays. Ultraviolet rays generate reactive oxygen species (hereinafter referred to ROS) in the skin, and at the level of the epidermis, this leads to the production of melanin and inflammation, while in the dermis it leads to effects such as the destruction of collagen fiber. Without sun care, damage due to light continuously affects the skin, forming spots and deep wrinkles from which we can no longer recover even with skin care. ROS generated because of ultraviolet rays produce carbonylated protein by the oxidation of sebum (the secretion of sebaceous glands). It is said that carbonylated protein leads to the generation of more ROS due to light sensitization, resulting in rough skin and dryness, and this has recently drawn considerable research attention. Such research has also shown that sunlight (ultraviolet rays) causes not only spots and wrinkles but also general skin deterioration such as dryness and roughness.

In addition, sun care is important not just for skin but also for hair, and many products are being marketed as protective measures against ultraviolet rays.
