Cosmetogenomics decodes hydrating action in cells

Hydration is composed of two distinct but complementary domains. On one side we have the regulation of hydric reserves and their circulation within different layers of the skin, and on the other the synthesis of lipidic substances and essential proteins, as well as their organisation to avoid excessive water loss.

Polyvalent hydrating active ingredients are rare. Most often, active ingredients are combined to provide this dual functionality. Aquaxyl (three Seppic patents) is able to meet both these needs, by supplying both humectant and a restructuring effect. Furthermore, through cosmetogenomics, we have been able to demonstrate at molecular level, its intimate mechanism of action in the epidermis.

Water is the primary component of the human body and represents 70% of the total weight of an average adult. It is indispensable to various chemical reactions in the body and ensures the transport of many solubilised substances. In addition it promotes waste elimination and helps control internal body temperature. This precious liquid also supports very fusional relationships with the skin. In fact, a gradient leads from the deep layers to the most superficial ones, allowing hydration to be distributed along it. Skin hydration also depends on different factors such as:

•  The amount of water in the body (coming largely from diet).
•  The phenomenon of transepidermal water loss (TEWL) resulting from the natural processes of transpiration and perspiration.
•  The skin’s capacity to retain water (via the glycoaminoglycans like hyaluronic acid, among others).
•  The capacity of the cells to transport water and solutes.
•  The hygroscopic ability (water retention) of living components in the epidermis.
•  The corneal layer’s capacity to retain water via its internal organisation.
