Industry water use highlighted in Paris

The global personal care industry remains competitive despite the continued gloomy economic outlook. In 2011, for example, exports from the European market alone were worth e14.2 billion, with France topping the list and Germany, Italy and the UK not far behind (Source: The European Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Market 2011, Cosmetics Europe).

The US remains a dominant force and as big brands begin to invest in Asia, trends are now traversing regions and impacting on new global product developments. With so much happening at an international scale, in-cosmetics 2013 will provide the opportunity to debate, discuss and discover all the latest trends under one roof when it returns 16-18 April. The 2013 instalment will be hosted in Paris – the heart of the French e12 billion beauty and personal care industry (2012 Euromonitor International), and one of the world’s leading influencers of fashion and beauty trends. With over 600 exhibitors expected and more stand space than ever before, already spanning 12,000 m2, there will be ample opportunities to do business and network with thousands of industry professionals over the course of the three day event. Major industry players such as Croda, DSM, Lubrizol and Merck will be displaying their latest innovations and technologies and with just two months to go before the doors open, over 30 first-time exhibitors originating from countries including Greece, Israel, Taiwan and Turkey have already signed up.
Water in the spotlight
This year, H20 has been chosen as the show’s theme, which is particularly relevant as 2013 is the UN’s International Year of Water Cooperation. In today’s age, where the world’s politicians are debating water management practices, the personal care industry cannot ignore the impetus to examine the role water plays in the production of cosmetic products. To bring the theme to life, a special programme dedicated to H20 has been devised. It includes two panel discussions where brands such as L’Oréal and P&G will explore water and biology for skin care product formulation and the reduction of the industry’s water footprint. An H20 trail will also clearly signpost the exhibitors with H20 projects on their stands so that visitors can explore the latest ingredient launches, formulations and product concepts that use water innovatively as they make their way around the show.
Brand new targeted zones
2013 will also see the addition of two brand new zones. Incorporating fragrance into cosmetic and personal care products poses multiple challenges including product stability, absorption and evaporation. In partnership with the Société Française des Parfumeurs (SFP), the Fragrance in Cosmetics Zone, situated at the heart of the show, will provide an interactive platform for visitors to discover exhibitors’ new and exciting scents and ingredient launches. A special half-day session as part of the Marketing Trends programme will also explore topics such as the use of synthetic vs. natural ingredients, formulation and technical challenges, and consumer trends. As regulatory frameworks and testing criteria become increasingly more complex and differ from region to region, the need for expert advice has risen. The new Testing and Regulation Zone will house suppliers operating in these arenas and put them clearly on the map for the first time. Visitors will be able to talk to experts about the latest testing technologies and gain advice on regulatory issues to ensure their products meet standards in terms of quality, efficacy, safety and claim validation. To support the zone, CONUSBAT will also run a one-day regulatory workshop on Worldwide Regulatory Affairs including speakers such as Dr Annelie Struessmann, CONUSBAT, Dr Gerald Renner, Cosmetics Europe, and Dr Alain Khaiat, Seers Consulting. “With two brand new zones and a highly topical and industry-relevant show theme, in-cosmetics 2013 will bring together thousands of industry professionals from all four corners of the world,” comments Lucy Gillam, event director, in-cosmetics. “Paris will be the perfect host for the show and there are already indications that 2013 will exceed Barcelona’s record-breaking event. The Educational Programme will be the most comprehensive yet with more seminars and presentations than ever before, meaning visitors will be able to gain unique insights across a diverse range of products.”
All the latest trends and tips
Innovation is an inherent part of the cosmetics industry with major cosmetics companies reformulating or replacing 25 per cent of their products each year (Source: European Commission). At in-cosmetics 2013, over 20 per cent more seminars and presentations will be on offer compared to 2012 as part of the Educational Programme. The free-to-attend Marketing Trends presentations and Innovation Seminars will give visitors the opportunity to gain valuable insights, while paid-for Workshops will provide hands-on advice on a range of topics. With 17 presentations already confirmed, the Marketing Trends programme will cover industry hot topics. Highlights include Nikola Matic, project manager, Kline & Company, who will lead a session on ‘Global beauty ingredients: new strategic segments for growth’, focusing on where mature markets stand compared to rapidly-growing regions such as China, while the future of the beauty industry will be debated by Emmanuelle Bassmann, managing director of In-Trend Ltd, during her presentation entitled ‘What’s on the horizon for beauty 2020’. Other notable sessions include Christopher Lindsley, global skincare analyst at Mintel, who will examine developments relating to the show’s H20 theme, taking a closer look at ‘Beauty drinks, mix-it-yourself, sustainability: the role of water in beauty trends and innovation’, while visitors will also be able to find out more about marketing to the growing over 50s demographic by attending Mark Beasly, managing director at RHC Advantage’s presentation, ‘Talking about my generation: the marketing challenges presented by an ageing population’. Exhibitors will also be putting innovation at the top of the agenda as they lead over 50 free-to-attend Innovation Seminars presenting their latest ingredient launches and formulation techniques. Designed to provide product expertise and knowledge first-hand, the seminars will cover a range of topics that tackle some of the industry’s biggest trends. Seminars include; ‘New Aristoflex Velvet Polymer with soft, velvet skin feel’ by Clariant; ‘Bio-energy for the extracellular matrix: one step forward to prevent senescence’ by Induchem; ‘Juvefox; a guardian of genomic integrity’ by Lipotec; and ‘Anti-ageing claim support applying advanced non invasive imaging systems’ led by proDERM. In addition to this, Workshops will give formulators, brand managers and R&D professionals the tools they need to create quality personal care products. As well as the one-day regulatory workshop, Perry Romanowski of Brains Publishing will share his tricks and techniques for formulators solving real-world problems during his ‘Cosmetic formulation optimisation’ workshop. Judi Beerling at Organic Monitor will also address the buoyant natural ingredients market, offering practical advice in her workshop, ‘Formulating using green ingredients’, while those interested in learning more about the world of microorganisms and preservatives can gain valuable insights during the ‘Cosmetic microbiology’ session. Anti-ageing remains a major concern for consumers as they seek to delay the onset of visible ageing. Those wishing to find out more can learn about the latest ingredient trends, cutaneous ageing and how Asian and Caucasian skin differ in the ‘Antiageing’ workshop organised by Alain Khaiat with speakers from companies including Johnson & Johnson, Kline & Company and L’Oréal. The University of Barcelona, International Hair Research Foundation and Queen Mary College at the University of London will also present the latest developments and trends in the field of hair cosmetology during the ‘Hair science in cosmetics research’ workshop organised by CEC Editore.
Rewarding innovation
The Innovation Zone will also make its return. Featuring exhibitors’ ingredient launches from the six months leading up to the event, it will be a focal point of the show and inspire new product development. The Innovation Zone Best Ingredient Award, presented during an awards ceremony on 16 April, will honour three companies that demonstrate innovation in the development of functional or active ingredients. On the Zone, Mintel Beauty and Personal Care analysts will also run daily live demonstrations giving visitors the opportunity to touch, test and taste the latest worldwide product launches featuring H20 including beauty drinks, skin care, hair care and colour cosmetics formulated with water from unique sources, and mix-it-yourself products that require the addition of water. Also being presented at in-cosmetics 2013 will be three other awards: the Lifetime Achievement Award, bestowed upon an individual for their outstanding dedication and contribution to the personal care and cosmetics industry will make its return in 2013, while Cosmetics & Toiletries magazine is also running awards in two categories, Best New Ingredient and Most Creative Application. With so much available and happening at in-cosmetics 2013, an official in-cosmetics App has been launched to help visitors easily navigate all on offer (www.in-cosmetics.com/App). For the first time ever, attendees will be able to plan their trip in advance and put together a personalised show agenda, as well as bookmark speakers, exhibitors and products to see during their visit.
