Triethyl citrate, known under the brand Citrofol® AI, approved for more than 50 years in the pharmaceutical and food industry – is now manufactured exclusively from nature-derived agro resources.
Triethyl citrate is a versatile cosmetic ingredient with excellent deodorising and skin care properties recognised as a natural active ingredient and flavour component. The deodorising 24-hour effect has been proven recently in a sniff test which will be described in this article.
The primary reasons for using a deodorant are to combat sweat and odour. This message is carried through in the product advertising with claims that often read: ‘long-lasting’ and ‘antiperspirant’. In 2011, roll-on deodorants accounted for 31%1 of new product sector launches. It is interesting to note that aerosols accounted for 52%1 of new introductions; however, these products usually contain ingredients that may be considered undesirable by consumers – flammable ingredients such as butane and isobutene. Natural deodorants thus tend to come in roll-on, stick or cream form whose popularity may well accelerate in the coming years. Also, it is significant that deodorants and body sprays have become widely segmented into specific male and female lines, especially in packaging and fragrances. Female consumers often favour soft, gentle formulations which respect the skin pH balance and this group is often attracted to products that are free from potential irritants. This is confirmed in that alcohol-free claims account for a third of new product launches. Scent plays an important role in deodorant and body spray selection with more than four in ten adults testing a deodorant’s fragrance before making a purchase.1 Triethyl citrate fits into these trends with its multi-functionality and follows future consumer demands for effective but natural and sustainable ingredients in personal care products.
