A report by New York cosmetic trend analysts Spate developed in partnership with Grant Industries has identified tretinoin as a rising ingredient for skin care.
The ‘Spate x Grant Industries: Top Rising Ingredients Report’ found tretinoin is steadily gaining popularity with around 255,000 monthly average searches and 18% year on year search volume growth.
Tretinoin (all trans-retinoic acid) is the most bioactive form among retinoids applied topically to the skin and increases the epidermal cellular turnover.
“Tretinoin is not only known for acne treatment, but also gaining traction for its effects in combating signs of ageing. Positioned as a synthetic cousin of vitamin A, it wields considerable influence within the beauty realm,” said Grant Industries director of sales & business development Lena McCaffrey.
“Grant experts advocate for a deeper exploration of retinoids alongside the exploration of natural alternatives such as bakuchiol, offering a nuanced approach to achieving similar skincare outcomes,” she added.
While hero ingredients like vitamin C continue to hold sway as top-searched elements along with skin care products, the report found a cluster of novel ingredients is asserting their potency, positioning themselves as even more powerful than the traditional counterparts.
“Vitamin C, retinoids, and hyaluronic acid are the gold standard, backed by dermatologists for their proven effectiveness. However, there's a wave of newcomer ingredients making bold claims,” said BeautyStat CEO Ron Robinson.
“Malassezin and astaxanthin assert greater antioxidant power than vitamin C. Azelaic acid, peptides, alfalfa extract, and bakuchiol claim to deliver results without irritation,” he added.
“Meanwhile, polyglutamic acid and snow mushrooms boast about absorbing significantly more water than traditional hyaluronic acid. As these ingredients proliferate in the skincare community, I hope to see them gain broader consumer awareness in the near future.”
